Preface
Qin Feng is a globally influential Chinese artist, best known as a pioneer and representative of “post-modern new ink”. He is rooted in both ancient Asian and contemporary world culture, captures the artistic soul in his seemingly improvised creations comprising elements like images, words and symbols. Implanting Chinese calligraphy into western abstraction, Qin Feng has developed a one-of-the-kind art language that is inclusive and refined. In the West Wind and East Water series, the mountains and cliffs arranged per Taoism are rendered as mysterious abstract patterns. In the Angry Angels series, the possibilities of ink are exhaustively explored - simplified vertical lines fill up the whole works, creating a space of tension.Bruce Beasley is a master sculpture, a “classical modernist” recognized over four decades in the U.S. and Europe for his expressive language of geometric shapes carefully calibrated in space. He is among the most inventive artists working in contemporary western sculpture over the last forty years. Early in 1960s, when Beasley was just a student, he was selected for the historically significant Art of Assemblage show, joining masters like Picasso, Duchamp and Willem De Kooning, who were also included. In the 1970s, he revolutionized both the art and the science communities by inventing a method for casting large, clear acrylic abstract sculptures, like the critically acclaimed Apolymon. By the 1980s Beasley had distilled the evocative and poetic geometric sculptures for which he is now well known, and also pioneered 3D technology as a legitimate creative tool for sculptural modeling. On view are examples from two of his most recent and revolutionary 3D-assisted works, the Coriolis and Torqueri series. In these works, the artist’s hand per se is not involved in the initial stages of a work’s creation, as Beasley digitally imagines and plays with shapes in cyber space, letting the computer try out and execute his ideas as he reaches the perfect spatial expression.. Inspiring collisions and fusions between eastern and western art can be expected here.
